Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Recently… about a month or so…  I have been quite into “The Pickin’ On Series” which is basically a bluegrass band that does covers of ALL kinds of music…. 80s, Pop, Metal, Rock… you name it.

I had heard of them before – years back – and while I thought they were good…. well you know sometimes music hits you at different times.  It could be a season, a certain emotion, a certain groove…. memory, event…. who knows. But I was listening to/perusing Pickin’ On’s playlist and rediscovered them.  And in this past month or so – several tunes I have really bee digging.  Top of the list has been their covers of “Don’t Fear the Reaper”, “Sunday Morning”, “Come Monday”, and “Take On Me”.

But the one I keep coming back to, singing along to, and hitting repeat a millions times on is Neil Young’s song “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”

Now the original song is, of course, a classic. It was released in the fall of 1970, and was considered Neil Young’s first solo hit.  While I like Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) and think they wrote some great songs, I have always felt  pretty *meh* about them. Neil Young on his own never thrilled me much either. Some good tunes, great lyrics is some songs.  But – you know – they just never really did it for me. I never felt a good connection to their music or style.  But this song!!

The lyrics are great, the melody is pleasant, and the attachment is there.  You can be sorrowful and gain something from the lyrics – conversely, you can be elated and full of love and connect to it.

I considered that I would write out what my take is on the song meaning – but then I thought, it could mean so many things.  I have a few POV’s on it, and to the next person may have several connections as well.  Love, in general, has so many grades and levels – the love you have for your pets, God, your parents, your Significant Other, your job, food, music, etc etc is all mutually exclusive. Not one love is equal or better — it is all love at different grades and purposes. This song is full of truth – but at what moment you hear this song determines that truth and the connected emotion.

The arrangement, the vocals — the emotion that comes from the Pickin’ On Series cover is really great. Plus, I love good bluegrass.  I encourage you to go find it on iTunes or Amazon. It is worth the money!

Meanwhile – I put this video together real quick.  Full lyrics below the clip.

Only Love Can Break Your Heart

When you were young and on your own
How did it feel to be alone?
I was always thinking of games that I was playing.
Trying to make the best of my time.

But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes only love can break your heart
What if your world should fall apart?

I have a friend I’ve never seen
He hides his head inside a dream
Someone should call him and see if he can come out.
Try to lose the down that he’s found.

But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes only love can break your heart
What if your world should fall apart?

I have a friend I’ve never seen
He hides his head inside a dream
Yes, only love can break your heart
Yes, only love can break your heart
